Varicose veins diagnostics

Varicose veins diagnostics

Varicose veins of the lower limbs occur in over 50% of population and constitute not only a cosmetic issue, but mostly a health problem.

First symptoms of varicose veins may include: slight swelling, spider veins (reticular veins). These symptoms often coincide with the feeling of fatigued and heavy legs, particularly at the end of the day.

The diagnosis at this stage of disease involves the evaluation of the advancement of the condition with the use of Doppler Ultrasound examination. A Doppler Ultrasound is a key diagnostic test as it visualizes the progression of the condition and decides about a further course of treatment.  The spider veins are treated with the application of radio frequency or sclerotherapy (injections closing off the veins).

Prophylaxis is crucial factor preventing the progression of the varicose veins or its significant delay. People prone to varicose veins should remember one simple rule: regular exercise helps and lack of it can be harmful. That is why prolonged standing or sitting should be avoided. Unfortunately, it is usually easier said than done, especially in a professional life which involves a lot of time spent in a sedentary position at a desk or in a standing position.  That is why it is so important to take advantage of the second type of prevention therapy namely the compression therapy.  The principle of compression therapy is to apply compression in the form of an elastic garment by wearing compression hosiery such as knee highs, stockings or tights  .

The development of modern technologies in medicine has altered the way in which varicose veins are treated surgically. The state-of-the-art technology which uses devices generating electromagnetic waves (radio frequency signals) enables surgeons to perform an endovascular procedure (inside incompetent veins);  hence the name of the procedure: EVRF (Endo Vascular Radio Frequency).

The procedure lasts about 40 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia. A surgeon inserts a 0.6 mm optic fibre through 1 mm incision or puncture and guided by the ultrasound places it in an incompetent vein and closes it off.  The patient can go back home within minutes after the procedure and minimal stains on the skin disappear in time.

As there are almost no pains after the procedure the treatment does not interfere with patient’s daily and professional activities. Thanks to endovascular procedures the surgical intervention does not involve hospitalization and a few week long recovery. The EVRF method is a breakthrough and the future of vein surgery.
